The best selling lube on Amazon, graded against WHO safety limits (2026 study)

An original Wet Betty study. We took Amazon's top 20 lubricants on October 17, 2026, matched each one to a published osmolality and pH from FDA filings and peer reviewed lab studies, and graded them against the WHO thresholds. We graded published data, not bottles in a lab.

By the Wet Betty editors · Published Oct 17, 2026

Fact checked against FDA 510(k) filings, WHO guidance and the sources listed below. How we review

Short version14 min read

We graded Amazon's 20 best selling lubes against WHO safety limits using published lab and FDA filing data. "Tested" here means graded against that data; we did not test bottles ourselves. Only 2 of the 20 meet the WHO ideal of 380 mOsm/kg or under, 6 exceed the 1,200 ceiling, and 6 water based best sellers have no published osmolality.

Key findings.

  • 12 of 20 best selling lubes have a published osmolality, the measure of how concentrated a lube is compared with your tissue. Only 6 of those values were confirmed against the current label.
  • 2 of 20 meet the WHO ideal of 380 mOsm/kg or under: Aloe Cadabra Natural (118) and Pre-Seed Fertility (260 to 370).
  • 4 of 20 fall between 380 and 1,200, above the ideal and under the WHO ceiling. They carry 43.1% of all the reviews on the top 20, because the number one seller is one of them.
  • 6 of 20 listings exceed the WHO ceiling of 1,200: two Astroglide Liquid sizes, two Astroglide Gel sizes, K-Y Warming Jelly and WOO More Play Coconut Love Oil.
  • 6 of 20 are water based lubes with no published osmolality in any FDA filing or lab study we could find.
  • 2 of 20 are silicone (Uberlube and Wet Platinum), where osmolality does not apply because there is no water in the formula.
  • The number one best seller, #LubeLife Water Based, is filed with the FDA at 600 to 700 mOsm/kg and pH 3.6 to 4.5.
  • K-Y Jelly was reformulated. Its current ingredients match an FDA filing at 780 to 1,180. The older glycerin formula measured 2,007 to 2,510 in three lab studies.
  • The highest reading in the top 20 is K-Y Warming Jelly at 8,600 mOsm/kg, about 7 times the WHO ceiling.
  • The top 20 listings are 18 distinct formulas and carry 530,237 reviews between them.

The top 20, graded.

This is the exact output of our audit script, run on the Amazon list scraped October 17, 2026. The grade uses the upper end of every published value we used for the product, the same rule as the lube index.

The scorecard in numbers.

Share of reviews weights each listing by the review count shown on the best seller list that day, a rough proxy for how many people bought it.

Measure Listings Share of top 20 Share of reviews
Have a published osmolality 12 60.0% 66.5%

Distinct formulas in the top 20: 18. Reviews counted: 530,237. Of the 12 listings with a published value, 2 are ideal, 4 are between 380 and 1,200, 6 are over 1,200.

The two shares tell different stories. By listing count, the most common outcome is "over the ceiling" or "not published," at 6 each. By reviews, the biggest group is the 380 to 1,200 band, almost all of it the number one #LubeLife listing with 168,603 reviews. Most people buying the most popular lube are getting something above the WHO ideal but well short of the extremes.

Product notes from the audit.

The script prints a note wherever a match needed judgment. These are its words, with the lube index cross checks updated after we corrected the index.

  • Rank 2, K-Y Jelly: Filed as KY Grosz Jelly; its ingredient list (water, propylene glycol, hydroxyethylcellulose, benzoic acid, carbomer, sodium hydroxide) matches the current K-Y Jelly label. Earlier formula measured at 2,007 (Edwards and Panay 2016), 2,200 (Ayehunie 2018), 2,510 (Dezzutti 2012). Cross check: the Wet Betty lube index listed 2,007 to 2,510 at the time and has since been corrected to 780 to 1,180.
  • Rank 3, #LubeLife 3X Anal: K183384 covers an earlier #LubeLife Water-Based Anal Lubricant; we could not confirm it is the 3X formula.
  • Rank 6, Astroglide Liquid, 12 oz: Current label: water, glycerin, propylene glycol, polyquaternium-7. Dezzutti listed polyethylene glycol and two parabens; Ayehunie listed polyquaternium 15. Cross check: the Wet Betty lube index lists 6,113, the 2012 Dezzutti value for the older formula.
  • Rank 8, Astroglide Gel, 7 oz: Astroglide sells its Gel in 4 and 7 oz of one formula. Edwards and Panay took the osmolality from Wolf 2012 and measured the pH.
  • Rank 11, K-Y Warming Jelly: Current label: propylene glycol, PEG-8, hydroxypropylcellulose, water, tocopherol, the same top ingredients Ayehunie listed.
  • Rank 12, #LubeLife Water Based, travel listing: The listing does not say whether this is the standard formula or the separate #LubeLife Toy lubricant, so we assigned no value.
  • Rank 13, Good Clean Love Almost Naked: Lab readings 194 and 240 are in the ideal band; the maker's published spec runs 250 to 400. Dezzutti 2012 measured 269 on a version that listed lemon and vanilla extracts. Cross check: the Wet Betty lube index lists 240 to 269.
  • Rank 15, Pre-Seed Fertility: pH 7.0 to 7.4 is set to match semen, not the vagina. Ayehunie 2018 measured 295.
  • Rank 18, WOO More Play Coconut Love Oil: The 510(k) ingredient list includes deionized water, which is why it has an osmolality.
  • Rank 20, Astroglide Liquid, 2.5 oz: Cross check: the Wet Betty lube index lists 6,113, the 2012 Dezzutti value for the older formula.

The most popular lube, by the numbers.

#LubeLife Water Based was number one on the day we pulled the list, and its numbers sit in the middle. The 2019 FDA 510(k) summary for #LubeLife Water-Based Lubricant specifies 600 to 700 mOsm/kg and a pH of 3.6 to 4.5. The pH matches a healthy vagina, which runs 3.8 to 4.5. The osmolality is roughly twice the body's own 260 to 290. For most people using a little lube now and then, that gap is unlikely to cause trouble. For anyone with dryness, thin menopausal tissue or recurring irritation, a lube at 380 or under is the more cautious pick.

K-Y Jelly, number two, is the surprise. Most published tables still show the glycerin formula at 2,007 to 2,510, and our own lube index did too until this audit; it has since been corrected. The jelly on the shelf today lists water, propylene glycol, hydroxyethylcellulose, benzoic acid, carbomer and sodium hydroxide, with no glycerin and no parabens. That list matches, ingredient for ingredient, a 2020 FDA filing by RB Health (US), the company behind K-Y, under the name KY Grosz Jelly, specified at 780 to 1,180. It now passes the WHO ceiling. It still does not reach the ideal. Our full take is in the K-Y Jelly review.

Safety of the most popular lubes.

None of these products is unsafe in the sense of being toxic. The concern with high osmolality is narrower and well documented. A lube far more concentrated than your tissue pulls water out of the surface cells. In lab models that shows up as damaged epithelium: Dezzutti and colleagues found hyperosmolar lubes reduced tissue viability and caused epithelial sloughing, and Ayehunie and colleagues found that lubes over 1,500 mOsm/kg markedly reduced barrier function in a 3D vaginal tissue model, while lubes under 400 did not damage the deeper layers. In people, that is felt as stinging or burning, and it matters more with dryness, menopause, frequent use and anal sex. The full explanation is in lube osmolality explained, and stinging that lingers is covered in burning after sex.

Six best sellers exceed 1,200. Four of those six are Astroglide's original Liquid and Gel. The brand's own glycerin and paraben free version is filed at 230 to 300, inside the ideal band, which says more about formulas than brands. See the Astroglide review.

Silicone and oil on the list.

Uberlube (rank 4) and Wet Platinum (rank 5) are silicone. Silicone contains no water, so it cannot pull water from tissue by osmosis, and the WHO osmolality limits do not apply. Dezzutti 2012 found Wet Platinum among the safest products in its testing. Silicone has its own trade off: it can degrade some silicone toys. Our picks are in best silicone lube.

WOO More Play Coconut Love Oil (rank 18) is sold as an oil, but its FDA ingredient list includes deionized water, so it has an osmolality, filed at 500 to 2,000. Pure oils have no osmolality, and oils of any kind can weaken latex condoms. The four bases are compared in types of lube.

Where sources disagree.

We show every conflict rather than pick a convenient number.

  • Good Clean Love Almost Naked. Two lab studies measured 194 and 240. The maker's own published spec is 250 to 400. Our rule grades on the upper end, so it lands just above the ideal band, even though every lab reading is inside it. Dezzutti 2012 measured 269 on a version whose ingredient list included lemon and vanilla extracts.
  • Pre-Seed. The 2020 FDA filing specifies 260 to 370 and a 2018 lab study measured 295. Some online summaries attribute 502 to Pre-Seed; Dezzutti 2012 published 502 for a product named PRÉ. We used the filing and the lab value tied to the Pre-Seed name.
  • Astroglide Liquid. Dezzutti measured 6,113 in 2012 and Ayehunie measured 4,500 in a 2018 paper. Neither tested today's exact label, which lists polyquaternium-7 and no parabens. We graded it on those values and flagged it as an earlier formula. No measurement of the current version is published.

Better scoring alternatives.

Three of the top 20 sit under the WHO ceiling with strong supporting data: Good Clean Love Almost Naked, Pre-Seed and Aloe Cadabra. If you want a lube from the ideal band on our index, Sliquid Organics Natural measured 106 in Dezzutti 2012, and Astroglide Glycerin and Paraben Free is filed at 230 to 300. If you prefer silicone, Uberlube is on the best seller list and outside the osmolality question entirely. More options are in best water based lube and best lube for sensitive skin.

Methodology.

What we pulled. Amazon's Best Sellers list for Personal Lubricants (category hpc/10786421), scraped on October 17, 2026. The scrape shows each product card twice in a row; we kept the first appearance of each ASIN, which gives the rank order shown on the list. We took the top 20 listings. Review counts are the figures shown on the list that day.

Where values come from. Only primary sources: FDA 510(k) summaries we opened directly (K183384, K201186, K193450), FDA 510(k) values compiled by Weaving Voices, and three peer reviewed lab studies: Dezzutti 2012 (PLoS One), Edwards and Panay 2016 (Climacteric) and Ayehunie 2018 (Toxicology Reports). For Good Clean Love we also used the maker's published spec. Edwards and Panay took the Astroglide Gel osmolality from a 2012 paper by Wolf and measured the pH themselves.

What counts as a match. A listing is matched when a filing or study names the same product. Where we could, we compared the ingredient list in the source with the current label ("current formula confirmed"). Where the only measured product had a different ingredient list, we flagged it as an earlier formula. Where a listing could be one of two formulas, we assigned no value. We did not estimate any value from ingredients.

How we graded. WHO/UNFPA/FHI360 2012 thresholds: ideal 380 mOsm/kg or under, interim ceiling 1,200. We formed one range from every value used for a product and graded on its upper end.

Limitations. A best seller list is a snapshot of one day and one store. Filing values are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements. Lab values come from one batch at one time, and formulas change, as K-Y Jelly and Astroglide Liquid show. pH is reported where published but not graded. Osmolality is one safety signal among several, alongside ingredients like fragrance, warming agents and preservatives. We graded published data, not products in our own lab.

The script is scripts/studies/bestseller-lube-audit.mjs in our repository. It reads the best seller file and our product ledger and prints everything above.

Frequently asked questions.

What is the best selling lube on Amazon?

On October 17, 2026, the number one product in Amazon's Personal Lubricants best seller list was #LubeLife Water Based Lube (8 oz). Its FDA 510(k) filing gives an osmolality of 600 to 700 mOsm/kg and a pH of 3.6 to 4.5. That is above the WHO ideal of 380 and under the WHO ceiling of 1,200.

Is the most popular lube safe?

Most popular lubes are not dangerous, but few meet the WHO ideal. Of Amazon's 20 best sellers, only 2 published values sit at 380 mOsm/kg or under, and 6 exceed the 1,200 ceiling. A lube far above the body's 260 to 290 can sting or irritate, especially with dryness, menopause or anal use. This is general information, not medical advice.

Is K-Y Jelly safe now?

The current K-Y Jelly has a new formula without glycerin or parabens. Its ingredient list matches FDA 510(k) K201186, which specifies 780 to 1,180 mOsm/kg and pH 3.5 to 4.5. That is under the WHO ceiling of 1,200 but above the ideal of 380. The older formula measured 2,007 to 2,510.

Which best selling lube has the lowest osmolality?

Aloe Cadabra Natural, measured at 118 mOsm/kg in a 2018 Toxicology Reports study. Pre-Seed Fertility is filed with the FDA at 260 to 370. Those are the only two of Amazon's top 20 that meet the WHO ideal of 380 or under.

Why do so many lubes not publish osmolality?

No US rule requires a lube label to print it. The number usually appears only in a company's FDA 510(k) summary or in independent lab studies, and many products have neither. Six of Amazon's 20 best sellers had no published value we could find.

Can I use this data in my article?

Yes. The study is free to cite with a link to wetbetty.com/amazon-best-selling-lubes-tested. The underlying lube values are also open at /api/lube-index.json. Please name the original source for each value as listed in the table.
