The best period swimwear for most people is the Knix Leakproof Swim Short, rated to absorb 2 to 4 super tampons with UPF 50+ fabric. Period swimwear handles light days, the start and end of a period, and backup. On heavy days, wear it over a menstrual disc, cup or tampon rather than relying on the liner alone.

Our picks.

The Knix Leakproof Swim Short is the best period swimwear for most people, and on heavy days it works best paired with a menstrual disc.

How we chose.

We did not swim in these. We compared what each brand and Amazon listing publishes: absorbency rating, coverage, fabric, sun protection and sizing, and we checked that every product link points to that exact listing. Knix is the only major period underwear brand with a full swim line on Amazon in the US, so it leads the list; we added two Amazon brands for higher stated absorbency and more coverage, and one disc for heavy days. Our method is on how we review. None of this is medical advice.

Knix Leakproof Swim Shorts.

Knix's most absorbent swim piece, rated Moderate at 2 to 4 super tampons per the listing. A short covers more than a bikini bottom, stays put when you dive or surf, and gives the absorbent liner more room front to back. The fabric is UPF 50+. Knix Swim Shorts on Amazon.

Knix Leakproof One-Piece Swimsuit.

A one piece with a Light rated liner, 1 to 3 regular tampons per the listing. It suits the first or last day of a period and spotting. The usual one piece tradeoff applies: bathroom trips mean pulling the whole suit down.

Knix Leakproof Swim Bikini Bottom.

The same Light rating in a bikini bottom that pairs with any top. Less coverage than the shorts means less liner, so it is best for light days or as backup to a menstrual disc.

Knix Teen Leakproof Swim High Rise Bikini Bottom.

A teen sized high rise bottom, rated Light. For a first period at swim class or camp, swimwear that needs no insertion removes a lot of worry. Pair it with a disc or tampon once your teen is comfortable with one.

SORIO Heavy Flow Period Swim Bottom.

An Amazon brand bottom with a 4 layer liner rated at 3 to 4 tampons' worth per the listing, higher than most swim pieces. The brand publishes less detail than Knix, so treat it as strong backup rather than proof against a heavy flow.

Beautikini Period Swim Shorts.

A high waisted, full coverage swim short with a wide waistband. The listing does not state absorbency in tampons or milliliters, so we list it for coverage and modesty, with an internal product on anything but light days.

Saalt Menstrual Disc.

The piece that makes heavy days in the water simple. A reusable silicone disc sits high in the vagina, holds about 50 ml in the Regular size per Saalt, and can stay in for up to 12 hours. Wear it with any swim piece on this list as backup. Full details are in the best menstrual discs.

How period swimwear works.

Period swimwear borrows its design from period underwear: an absorbent liner in the gusset, a wicking layer against skin, and a leak resistant barrier underneath, sewn into quick drying swim fabric. The liner holds fluid; the barrier keeps it from passing into the water or the outer fabric. Coverage matters as much as the rating. A short or high rise bottom has more liner area than a bikini, and a one piece that fits snugly at the leg keeps the liner where it needs to be.

Absorbency, and when swimwear is enough.

Each brand tests its own pieces, so ratings are a guide. Knix's scale is the clearest: Light is 1 to 3 regular tampons and Moderate is 2 to 4 super tampons. For reference, the FDA's tampon labeling standard rates a regular tampon at 6 to 9 grams of absorbency.

Flow Swimwear alone? Better plan
Spotting, first or last day Yes Any Light piece
Light Yes Light or Moderate piece
Moderate Often, for a few hours Knix Swim Shorts, or add a disc
Heavy No Disc, cup or tampon, with swimwear as backup

If you are not sure which day you are on, err toward an internal product plus swimwear for long beach days, travel, or anywhere a change is hard.

Internal products under swimwear.

Menstrual discs and cups. Both collect rather than absorb, so they do not swell with pool or sea water, and both can be worn for up to 12 hours per their brands. That makes them the easiest companion for a full day out. Compare them in the best menstrual cups and the best menstrual discs.

Tampons. A tampon absorbs some water while you swim, so change it soon after you get out. The FDA's rules still apply: use the lowest absorbency you need, change every 4 to 8 hours, and never wear one for more than 8 hours. If you want a cotton option, see the best organic tampons.

Toxic shock syndrome. Any internal product carries a small TSS risk. Cleveland Clinic lists sudden high fever, vomiting, diarrhea, a sunburn like rash and dizziness as warning signs. Remove the product and get urgent care if they appear.

How to choose a period swimsuit.

  • Flow first. Buy Moderate if you want one piece to cover most days. Light pieces are backup.
  • Coverage second. Shorts and high rise bottoms carry more liner than bikinis.
  • Fit snug, not tight. Gaps at the leg let water and fluid move. Size by the brand chart, not by your usual swimsuit size.
  • Sun protection. Knix's swim fabric is UPF 50+, which matters for long days outside.
  • Activity. Surfing, diving and laps put more strain on a bikini bottom. A short stays in place.
  • Teens. A teen line is cut for smaller frames and is easier to wear under a school swimsuit policy.

Caring for period swimwear.

Chlorine, salt and sunscreen are harder on fabric than everyday wear. Rinse in cold fresh water as soon as you are out, then rinse the liner until the water runs clear. Wash cold by hand or on a gentle cycle in a mesh bag. Skip fabric softener and bleach, which coat or break down absorbent layers. Line dry in the shade; heat and direct sun shorten the life of the elastic and the barrier layer. A piece that has started to leak after many washes has reached the end of its liner, even if the fabric looks fine.

Swimming on your period.

Swimming on your period is safe and normal, and exercise can ease cramps for some people. If cramps keep you out of the water, our period cramp relief guide covers heat, pain relievers and what the evidence supports. If your periods are so heavy that no combination keeps you comfortable, the NHS treats changing products every 1 to 2 hours as a sign of heavy periods worth raising with a clinician.

Frequently asked questions.

Does period swimwear actually work?

Yes, within its rating. A period swimsuit has an absorbent, leak resistant liner in the gusset. It suits light days, the start and end of a period, and backup. It is not designed to absorb a heavy flow for hours in the water.

Can you wear period swimwear on a heavy day?

Wear it as backup. Use a menstrual disc, cup or tampon as your main protection and let the swimwear catch leaks. The SORIO bottom on this list is rated higher than most, at 3 to 4 tampons' worth per the listing.

Will people be able to tell I am wearing period swimwear?

The pieces here look like ordinary swimwear. The liner adds a little thickness in the gusset, and black is the most common color for a reason.

How do you wash period swimwear?

Rinse in cold fresh water as soon as you can, especially after chlorine or salt water. Then wash cold by hand or on a gentle cycle, skip fabric softener and bleach, and line dry in the shade.

Is period swimwear good for teens?

It is one of the easiest options for swim class, camp and first periods, because it needs no insertion. Knix makes a teen line sized for younger bodies.

Do you need a tampon with period swimwear?

Not on light days. On moderate days, it depends on the piece and how long you will be in the water. On heavy days, yes, or a disc or cup.
