The best vaginal moisturizers, ranked on published osmolality, ingredients and format (2026)

A vaginal moisturizer is the everyday fix for dryness from menopause, breastfeeding or medication, used on a schedule rather than during sex. Which ones have published osmolality and pH, what hyaluronic acid can do, and the seven we would consider, including a balm for the outside.

The best vaginal moisturizer on published data is YES VM: 250 mOsm/kg and pH 4.15, inside the WHO ideal. Revaree is the best hyaluronic acid insert, and Replens is the best known, with higher osmolality. Moisturizers are used every one to three days, not during sex. For dryness on the outer skin, a vulva balm such as VMAGIC helps.

Our picks.

How we chose.

We did not test these moisturizers, and we never estimate a number. We ranked on what can be checked: published osmolality and pH from the FDA 510(k) filings compiled by Weaving Voices and from Edwards and Panay's 2016 lab data, graded against the WHO 2012 thresholds; the ingredient list on each label; the format; and the evidence for the main active ingredient. Only YES VM and Replens have published numbers. Where a product has none, we say so and judge it on its label. Every product has a verified Amazon listing.

Why osmolality matters for moisturizers.

Osmolality measures how concentrated a gel is. The WHO advisory on lubricants calls 380 mOsm/kg or under ideal and 1,200 the ceiling. A product far above that draws water out of the cells it sits on, which can sting and, in lab studies, damage the vaginal lining. That matters even more in a moisturizer, which sits on thin, dry tissue for days rather than minutes. Our lube osmolality explained page covers the mechanism, and the lube index has every number we hold.

Moisturizer, lube or estrogen.

A moisturizer is used on a schedule. Cleveland Clinic says moisturizers adhere to the vaginal tissue to help the cells hold moisture and are applied every one to three days. It changes your baseline.

A lube is used during sex to cut friction, and it is short acting. Many people with dryness need both. See vaginal moisturizer vs lube and, for sex, lube for menopause dryness.

Prescription treatment treats the cause. Cleveland Clinic says at least half of women entering menopause show signs of genitourinary syndrome of menopause, and lists estrogen and DHEA therapy as the most effective treatments. If moisturizers and lube are not enough, a clinician may prescribe a low dose vaginal option. Our how to treat vaginal dryness guide walks through the steps, and vaginal dryness causes covers why it happens outside menopause too, including postpartum dryness.

Hyaluronic acid.

Hyaluronic acid binds many times its weight in water and is the active ingredient in Revaree and in several gels. A 2021 systematic review in the Journal of Sexual Medicine concluded it has efficacy, safety and tolerability comparable with vaginal estrogens for symptoms of vaginal atrophy, and called it a possible alternative for people who cannot use hormones. The authors noted the studies measured outcomes in different ways, so the comparison is not airtight. It is still the best evidence behind any hormone free moisturizer ingredient.

How to get the most from one.

Use it at bedtime so it stays in place, on the schedule the label gives, usually every one to three days. Give it a few weeks before judging. Keep washing to plain water on the vulva; soap and fragrance make dryness worse, as our best feminine wash page explains. If you need something for sex, use a lube with good numbers on top.

When to see a clinician.

See a clinician if dryness makes sex painful or daily life uncomfortable despite a moisturizer and lube, if you have bleeding after menopause, spotting after sex, a new discharge or odor, or urinary symptoms such as burning or frequent UTIs. Ask about vaginal estrogen, DHEA or other prescription options, which Cleveland Clinic calls the most effective treatments. More guides are in the health hub and the dryness hub. This page is general information, not medical advice.

Frequently asked questions.

What is the best vaginal moisturizer?

On published numbers, YES VM. It is the only moisturizer on our ledger inside the WHO ideal for osmolality with a pH in the healthy range. Revaree is the best hyaluronic acid insert if you prefer a no mess format. Replens is the best known, with higher osmolality.

How often should I use a vaginal moisturizer?

Most are used every one to three days, often at bedtime, according to Cleveland Clinic and the product labels. Follow the label. Using more often than directed rarely adds comfort.

What is the difference between a vaginal moisturizer and lube?

A moisturizer is used on a schedule to keep tissue hydrated day to day. A lube is used during sex to cut friction. Many people with dryness need both. Our guide to moisturizer versus lube covers the details.

What is a vulva balm?

A balm is an external moisturizer for the outer skin of the vulva, where dryness, chafing and itching often start. VMAGIC Vulva Balm is olive oil and beeswax based. It is not for inside the vagina, and oil weakens latex condoms.

Is hyaluronic acid good for vaginal dryness?

The evidence is encouraging. A 2021 systematic review found hyaluronic acid comparable with vaginal estrogen for symptoms of vaginal atrophy, though the studies measured outcomes differently. It is a reasonable hormone free option.

When do I need vaginal estrogen instead?

If a moisturizer and lube do not make sex or daily life comfortable, or you have urinary symptoms, ask a clinician. Cleveland Clinic lists estrogen and DHEA therapy as the most effective treatments for vaginal atrophy, and low dose vaginal options exist.
