The best feminine wash, if you use one at all, and how to use it safely (2026)
Gynecologists will tell you the vagina cleans itself and plain water is enough for the vulva. If you still want a wash, here is how to pick one that will not irritate, which ingredients to avoid, and the six gentlest options in the aisle.

Fact checked against FDA 510(k) filings, WHO guidance and the sources listed below. How we review

The best feminine wash is a fragrance free, gentle cleanser used only on the vulva, the outer skin, and rinsed off. Vagisil Fragrance-Free tops our list. But ACOG advises plain warm water as enough, the vagina cleans itself, and you should never douche. A wash cannot fix a fishy smell; that needs a clinician.
Our picks.

- Best drugstore pick: Summer's Eve Fragrance Free All-Over Daily Wash
- Best from a lube brand: Good Clean Love Balance Feminine Wash
- Best plant based: The Honey Pot Sensitive Feminine Wash
- Best wipes: Summer's Eve Fragrance Free Gentle Wipes
How we chose.
We did not test these washes, and nobody can judge irritation risk from one shower. We read every label for fragrance, soap and sulfates, and kept washes that are fragrance free or as close to it as the category gets. We weighed the brand's stated claims, such as hypoallergenic or dermatologist tested, against ACOG's advice on what to avoid. Every product has a verified Amazon listing and a large review base. We left out douches, scented washes, sprays, boric acid washes and anything marketed for use inside the vagina.
Vulva, not vagina.
The vulva is the outside: the outer and inner lips, the clitoral hood, and the skin around the vaginal opening. The vagina is the internal canal. It keeps its own acidic balance with Lactobacilli and cleans itself with normal discharge.
That is why the advice is consistent across the medical sources. ACOG says to use plain warm water to clean the vulva and notes that soaps and detergents can change the normal balance of organisms inside the vagina. The Office on Women's Health says to wash only the outside, with warm water, and to avoid scented products. Nothing on this page belongs inside.
No douching.
Douching means rinsing the inside of the vagina with water or a solution. It does not clean anything that needs cleaning, and it is linked to real harm. The CDC says douching might increase the risk of bacterial vaginosis relapse and that no data support it. The Office on Women's Health lists BV, pelvic inflammatory disease, and pregnancy problems among its risks, and says women who douche weekly are about five times more likely to get BV. Our BV treatment guide explains what actually treats it.
Fragrance and irritants.
| Ingredient or claim | Why it matters | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Fragrance or parfum | A common cause of vulvar irritation and allergy | Choose fragrance free |
| Essential oils, including lavender and tea tree | Natural does not mean non irritating; they carry fragrance allergens | Patch test, or skip |
| Strong sulfate cleansers | Can strip and dry delicate skin | Prefer mild cleansers |
| Antiseptics and boric acid washes | Not needed on healthy skin | Skip unless a clinician suggests one |
| "pH balanced" | Usually mildly acidic, which is gentler than soap, but not a regulated term | A plus, not a guarantee |
| Douche or internal rinse | Linked to BV and other harms | Never |
ACOG goes further than washes: it advises against feminine hygiene sprays, full body deodorants and scented tampons. Our Lume deodorant review explains where whole body deodorants fit, and our lube ingredients to avoid page covers the same irritants in lube.
How to use a feminine wash.
- Use warm water, and only the outer vulva. Part the outer lips gently; do not wash inside the vaginal opening.
- Use a small amount, then rinse thoroughly. Residue is a common cause of itch.
- Pat dry, front to back.
- Once a day at most. Many people are better with water most days.
- Stop if anything stings, itches or burns, and go back to water.
Odor as a clue.
A mild, slightly sour scent is normal, and Cleveland Clinic describes it that way. Sweaty, musky odor in the groin is skin odor, which washing helps. A fishy smell, especially after sex, usually means bacterial vaginosis or trichomoniasis, and a wash will only mask it for an hour. Start with vaginal odor for the smell by smell guide.

Sensitive skin, dryness and sex.
If washing stings, the problem may be dryness rather than dirt, especially after menopause, postpartum or while breastfeeding. Water only plus a vulvar moisturizer usually helps more than any wash; see the best vaginal moisturizers. If irritation shows up after sex, check your lube; the best lube for sensitive skin and burning after sex cover the usual culprits.
When to see a clinician.
See a clinician for a strong or fishy smell, a change in discharge, itching, burning, sores, or a rash that does not clear within a few days of stopping products and using water only. Get care promptly if you are pregnant with new symptoms, or if you have fever or pelvic pain. More guides are in the health hub. This page is general information, not medical advice.
Frequently asked questions.
Do I need a feminine wash?
No. ACOG advises plain warm water for the vulva, and the vagina cleans itself. A wash is optional. If you like one, choose a fragrance free product, use it on the outer vulva only, and rinse well.
What is the best feminine wash for odor?
A wash can only clean skin odor on the outside. A strong or fishy smell usually comes from inside, from bacterial vaginosis or trichomoniasis, and needs a test and prescription treatment, not a stronger wash.
Is Summer's Eve bad for you?
Not inherently, but some versions are scented, and fragrance is a common cause of vulvar irritation. If you buy Summer's Eve, pick the fragrance free wash and use it on the outside only. Never use any brand's douche.
What does pH balanced mean on a feminine wash?
It usually means the wash is mildly acidic, closer to vulvar and vaginal skin than regular soap, which is alkaline. It is a marketing term, not a regulated standard, and it does not make a wash safe to use inside the vagina.
Are feminine wipes safe?
Fragrance free wipes are fine for the outer vulva now and then, such as after exercise or on a trip. Wipe front to back and do not use them inside. Scented wipes can irritate, and many wipes should not be flushed.
Can a feminine wash cause a yeast infection or BV?
It can contribute. ACOG says soaps and detergents can change the normal balance of organisms, and douching is linked to BV. If you get infections often, try water only for a while and see a clinician.
