Fact checked against FDA 510(k) filings, WHO guidance and the sources listed below. How we review

The best ovulation test for most people is a pack of easy@Home LH strips with its photo app, because LH strips predict ovulation reliably and cost little per test. Clearblue Advanced Digital reads estrogen and LH with no lines to judge. Inito and Proov add PdG, which confirms ovulation actually happened. None of these is birth control.
Our picks.
Start with easy@Home LH strips and the app; move to Clearblue Advanced if you hate reading lines, and to Inito or Proov if you want proof that ovulation happened.
- Best overall: easy@Home Ovulation Test Strips
- Best digital: Clearblue Advanced Digital Ovulation Test
- Best fertility tracker: Inito Fertility Monitor
- Best for confirming ovulation: Proov Predict and Confirm Kit
- Best bulk value: Pregmate Ovulation Test Strips
The short version.
Ovulation tests come in three tiers. LH strips predict the day or so before ovulation, cheaply. Digital tests do the same reading for you, and the better ones add estrogen to show more fertile days. Fertility trackers read several hormones, including PdG, so they can tell you not only when ovulation should happen but that it did. Pick the tier that matches your cycle and your patience.
How we chose.
We did not use these tests and make no claim about results in anyone's hands. We ranked them on:
- Which hormones they read: LH only, LH plus estrogen, or LH, estrogen, PdG and FSH.
- How the result is shown: lines you judge, a smiley face, or numbers in an app.
- What the maker states, such as LH sensitivity, PdG thresholds and FDA clearance, from the brand's own listing or site.
- Strip count and ongoing cost in strips, not dollars, since we never quote prices.
- FDA and ACOG guidance on what home ovulation tests can and cannot do.

| Test | 50 LH strips |
The picks, one by one.
easy@Home Ovulation Test Strips, best overall.
easy@Home strips are the default for a reason: 50 LH strips per pack, enough for one long cycle or two normal ones, and the Premom app, which photographs each strip and lines them up so you can see the surge build instead of guessing. The listing calls them FSA eligible. The trade off is LH only. They tell you a surge is happening, not that ovulation followed.
Clearblue Advanced Digital Ovulation Test, best digital.
Clearblue Advanced Digital reads two hormones, estrogen (as E3G) and LH. When estrogen rises it shows a flashing smiley face for high fertility; when it detects the LH surge it shows a steady smiley for 48 hours, your peak days. Clearblue says it typically identifies 4 or more fertile days, more than an LH only test, and it sets a personal threshold from your own baseline. No lines to read. It costs much more per test than strips.
Inito Fertility Monitor, best fertility tracker.
The Inito monitor clips to your phone and reads one strip for four hormones: E3G, LH, PdG and FSH. You get numbers and a cycle chart instead of a yes or no. The E3G rise opens the fertile window, LH marks the surge, and a sustained PdG rise afterward confirms ovulation. That combination is what makes it useful for irregular cycles, or for anyone who has had positive LH tests and still wonders whether ovulation is happening. The box includes 15 strips; refills are a recurring cost.
Proov Predict and Confirm Kit, best for confirming ovulation.
The Proov kit pairs LH strips for prediction with PdG strips for confirmation. Proov says its PdG tests are FDA cleared, turn positive at 5 mcg/mL of PdG in urine, and are taken on days 7 to 10 after peak fertility. Positive PdG on those days suggests ovulation happened. It is cheaper than a monitor and gives a clear answer to the question LH strips leave open.
Pregmate Ovulation Test Strips, best bulk value.
Pregmate strips are another 50 strip LH pack. Pregmate lists LH detection at 25 mIU/mL. Pair them with any photo app to compare lines day to day. A solid backup or second brand if easy@Home is out of stock.
Ovulation tests compared.
| Test | Hormones read | Result shown | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|---|
| easy@Home strips | LH | Lines, app photo | Surge is happening |
| Pregmate strips | LH | Lines | Surge is happening |
| Clearblue Advanced Digital | E3G, LH | Smiley faces | High and peak fertile days |
| Proov Predict and Confirm | LH, then PdG | Lines | Surge, then whether ovulation happened |
| Inito Fertility Monitor | E3G, LH, PdG, FSH | Numbers in an app | Fertile window, surge and confirmation |
LH, estrogen and PdG, explained.
LH. Luteinizing hormone is made by the pituitary gland. A small amount is always present, then it spikes just before ovulation. The FDA puts that surge about 1 to 1.5 days before ovulation. LH tests catch the spike.
Estrogen (E3G). Estrogen rises in the days before the LH surge. The FDA notes its breakdown product, E3G, builds up in urine around ovulation and thins cervical mucus, which helps sperm move. Tests that read E3G flag fertile days earlier than LH alone.
PdG. After the egg is released, the leftover follicle makes progesterone. PdG is its urine breakdown product. A sustained rise means ovulation happened. That is the one thing LH and estrogen tests cannot tell you.
FSH. Follicle stimulating hormone helps an egg mature. Inito and some Proov kits read it. It is a background signal, and an unusual result is something to discuss with a clinician, not to interpret alone.
How to read your results.
- On LH strips, a positive is usually a test line as dark as or darker than the control line. A faint test line is normal and is not a surge.
- Test at the same time each day, and follow your leaflet on first morning urine, since brands differ. Avoid drinking a lot right before testing, which dilutes urine.
- Track the trend, not single strips. Photographing them in a row, as the Premom app does, makes the surge obvious.
- The surge day and the day after are usually the most fertile, by the FDA's timing.
- On PdG tests, follow the day count on the leaflet; Proov tests on days 7 to 10 after peak.
The FDA says home tests detect LH and E3G reliably about 9 times out of 10 when used carefully, and that starting at the wrong time in your cycle makes the test unreliable. It also says not to use ovulation tests to prevent pregnancy.
When LH tests mislead. Conditions that keep LH high, such as polycystic ovary syndrome, and the hormone shifts of perimenopause can make LH strips read positive often or never show a clear surge. If your strips never make sense, a tracker with PdG or a conversation with a clinician will tell you more than another pack.
Trying to conceive, the rest of the checklist.
ACOG advises taking a prenatal vitamin with at least 400 mcg of folic acid starting at least 1 month before pregnancy; our best prenatal vitamins compares the labels. When the time comes, our best pregnancy tests ranks early tests on sensitivity.
Lube matters when you are trying. Many common lubes are not designed with sperm in mind, and some ingredients, like spermicides, warming agents and heavy fragrance, are on our lube ingredients to avoid list for anyone. If you need one, look for a product labeled as fertility friendly, keep it simple, and see how to use lube. Our pH balanced lube guide and best water based lube list explain the numbers we grade on. If sex has started to feel like a chore with a deadline, sex toys for couples is a lighter read.
When to see a clinician.
ACOG recommends a fertility evaluation if you have not become pregnant after 1 year of regular sex without birth control, after 6 months if you are over 35, and now if you are over 40. See a clinician sooner if your periods are very irregular or absent, if LH tests never show a surge across several cycles, if PdG never rises, or if you have pelvic pain, very heavy periods or a known condition such as endometriosis or polycystic ovary syndrome. Frequently asked questions.
What is the most accurate ovulation test?
For predicting ovulation, LH tests from established brands perform similarly; the FDA says they detect LH reliably about 9 times out of 10 with careful use. Tests that also read PdG, like Inito and Proov, add confirmation that ovulation happened, which LH alone cannot give.
How do you read an ovulation test strip?
On most LH strips, a test line as dark as or darker than the control line means a positive surge. A lighter test line is negative, even though LH is always present at a low level. Check your leaflet, since some brands differ.
When should I start taking ovulation tests?
It depends on your cycle length. Most leaflets include a chart; with a 28 day cycle, leaflets often start testing around day 10 to 12. With irregular cycles, start earlier and test longer, or use a tracker that reads estrogen too.
What time of day should I take an ovulation test?
Leaflets differ. Some LH strip brands suggest testing later in the day rather than with first morning urine, while some digital tests ask for first morning urine. Test at the same time each day and follow your brand's leaflet.
How long after a positive ovulation test do you ovulate?
Usually within about a day to a day and a half. The FDA puts the LH surge about 1 to 1.5 days before ovulation, and Clearblue describes it as 24 to 36 hours before. The surge day and the next are often the most fertile.
Are fertility trackers like Inito worth it?
They are worth it if you have irregular cycles, want numbers rather than lines, or want to confirm ovulation with PdG. If your cycles are regular and strips work for you, a cheap LH strip pack does the core job.
Are ovulation strips as accurate as digital tests?
They detect the same hormone. Basic ovulation strips and digital tests like Clearblue both read the LH surge in urine. The digital test reads the result for you, and Clearblue Advanced also tracks estrogen (E3G) to show more fertile days. Many people test daily with strips and keep a digital test to confirm a line they cannot read.
